What is Statistics?

• Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical information.

Our first sports analytics question: Are all 10 digits equally likely to occur at the end of each quarter of an NCAA football game? Find data to provide a justification for your decision. You may work with a partner on this assignment. Your decison and justification are due on Wednesday, January 15.

Getting Started with Statistical Software

• I suggest creating a subdirectory on your H:\drive for Stat 116.
• The last time I taught this course, I collected student data from a reaction time experiment (reaction time, the gender of the "catcher," and the class of the "catcher" are recorded in p:\data\math\hartlaub\SportsStats\ReactionTimeS2018.csv.) Open this csv file and look at the data.
